Made in USA

Made in USA

A minor problem with Paul Graham’s latest piece is that he says that Americans are good at making movies. But all the best movies I’ve seen in the last few years haven’t been from the USA, and have at least seemed to be well planned (Amelie for instance).

It doesn’t ruin his argument, but it wasn’t the best example.

ASX Game Review

Now:

  • AWC – MACD above signal, EMA 9 above EMA 20, Volume right on 14 day Volume Avge.
  • BRZ – breakout above $1.95, very strong volume.
  • GAN – looks overbought, but MACD and EMA indicators look fine
  • CML – heading to overbought, but MACD and EMA indicators look good
  • FOA – uptrending but in overbought territory
  • FGL – Broken above $5.20 resistance. Overbought on RSI, but volume on breakout is good
  • HVN – big breakout above $3.05, but ‘shooting star’ pattern formed on 16 Nov
  • QAN – uptrending
  • RIN – dominant candle on strong volume

Watch:

  • AQP – small divergence from MACD, still bad though, watch
  • FXJ – $4.30 has become a support line. Keep an eye on this
  • OST – could be poised for a break above $2.80, watch

Konfabulator

I tried the new Windows version of Konfabulator today, but it didn’t pass the 15 minute test.

The quick rundown: Konfabulator is a ‘widget’ container, where widgets apparently can do pretty much anything. The standard widgets are things like weather, time, to-do lists, calendars, system monitors etc.

These widgets look great, but I didn’t really think they’d be all that useful (or used), and the memory overheads seemed to be way too high for what would essentially be eye-candy.

I didn’t investigate any third-party widgets, so maybe I’m missing out. I’ll try to come back and have a more in depth look in a month or two.

Oh, and the website is painfully slow. I’ll put that down to volume considering the Windows version has just been released…

ASX Game Review

  • BCA – could be ready to rebound from support line, keep an eye on it over next few days
  • BSL – divergence on MACD, could recover. monitor
  • MGR – must break through resistance at $4.60
  • ORI – monitor
  • PMN – reasonable move up on good volume
  • QAN – needs to stay above $3.35
  • SIG
  • SGP
  • TEN

ASX Game Review

  • ALN – broken through resistance at $7.60, but doesn’t look confident
  • AWC – dramatic change of momentum. EMA and MACD crossovers.
  • ANN – needs support over $9.00
  • APN – unclear on MACD, but could be worthwhile if it receives support above $4.75
  • ANZ – big gains over last three days, EMA still positive
  • CCA – could slow today
  • CML
  • IAG – ??
  • ORI – ??

Troy

3200 years ago, the Trojans and the Greeks battled over land and honour. Troy’s walls had never been breached, but when Troy’s ruler’s son, Paris, leaves the Greeks with Helen of Sparta, revenge is sought and the Greeks set out to Troy.

Hector (Paris’s brother) is Troy’s famed warrior, while Achilles is the Greek known as the greatest warrior to have ever lived. They have several battles and also lead their armies against each other (although the Kings have final control, the best warriors are the heart of the armies), but when Hector mistakenly kills Achilles cousin, they finally battle to the death.

Visually stunning and tense movie. Very worthwhile.

Open Water

Open Water is a low budget movie (approx US$136,000) that was filmed almost entirely on relatively cheap digital camera technology.

The acting was rather poor (kept expecting the funky porn music to kick in and for the characters to lose their kit), but by the time they’d been deserted in the water it was clear that the characters were secondary to the situation.

Relatively short, but it stayed away from a corny ending, which was welcome.

A Three Hour Vote

A Three Hour Vote

Sounds like waiting hours to vote is common in the US. urgh. Good on them for sticking it out though.

Causes

Lovelessness

Snobbery

Expectation

Meritocracy

  • This leads to feeling a failure if one is not successful,
since there is no one to blame but your own stupidity/laziness in a
    truly meritocratic society.

Solutions

Christianity

  • Christians avoid typical capitalist status anxiety by
constantly reaffirming the idea that aside from our physical reality
there is a spiritual reality for all of us.

Bohemia

  • Bohemians were/are more worried about substance than status.
They go to great lengths to examine somethings intrinsic value.
