War Of The Worlds

Definitely exciting, gripping in parts, but left me thinking that what I want out of a really compelling sci-fi movie is defined in this equation:

X is to War Of The Worlds as Gattica is to The Island, and a western action movie is to an old Jackie Chan flick.

Confused?

Quadrophenia

Famous movie about Mods and Rockers and youth culture in the sixties.

Jimmy is confused and talks about wanting to be different, yet spends his days blindly following the social conventions of his peers. He partakes in drugs, lusts after a girl, gets violent, and at the end of the day experiences all the things a normal young’un goes through. There’s a lot of youth angst, and a dramatic ending, but the highlights for me were listening to Sting curse under his breath a few times… classic.

MP3 Tagging

I’ve got a lot of downloaded DJ sets, which are mostly not tagged. This is a problem because the beautiful/stupid iPod I have doesn’t let you browse by filename.

I want software that does this:

  • lets me edit and add tags
  • each field (e.g. artist, title, album, genre) accessible by a hotkey
  • ability to edit multiple files at once
  • saves the changes quickly (since the DJ sets are large files, and some taggers seem to be affected by file size)

The best software I’ve found for editing tags is ephPod, but that only works against an iPod.

I’ve tried at least half a dozen other shareware and freeware utilities, and they are either too complicated, or don’t cover the above feature set. The next best option is mp3Namer, its only failing is that it doesn’t have hotkeys for each field. And it only costs $5.

Who would’ve thought that just manipulating IDv3 tags could be so hard to do right? Some of the packages in the $20 – $30 range are a helluva lot harder than they need to be, and thats too much money for such a simple task.

Update: mp3Namer has disappointed too — it only allows genres from a preset list. I’m sorely tempted to write my own mp3 tag editor, but its just a little too much effort for something thats been done before. Why is such a simple task so damn hard!

Maria Full Of Grace

Maria is pregnant, sick of living at home, and has just broken up with her boyfriend. She needs money, and is lured by the chance of making cash as a drug mule. The film shows the forthcoming experiences and how she handles them “with grace”, protecting herself and her best friend in all manners of danger. Very good. 7/10

Withnail & I

Comedy about two no-gooders who have trouble pulling their lives together. They abscond to a farm to sort themselves out. Very black comedy, hilarious in parts. Withnail’s companion finally sees the light. 7/10

Paris, Texas

Wim Wenders has such a unique honest eye. It is impossible not to be moved by his use of landscapes and locations, whether there are people in them or not. One could watch this film with the sound off and still be enthralled.

Elephant

Directed by Gus Van Sant

Also a unique style (like Wim Wenders), he tells the story of a high school massacre (loosely based on Columbine), and the events leading up to it.

Big question raised: Did Gus Van Sant include the homosexual scene to ‘deglamourise’ it to high school students (who are well versed in the problems with being different).

Beautifully shot, the senese of space and lack of narrative make this a standout film.
